The United Nations Association in Canada (UNA-Canada) is honoured to join as an honorary partner of the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia’s British Columbia Journalism Fellowship and to help amplify the vital work of this year’s two exceptional fellows, nationally and globally.
The fellowship, delivered through the Office of the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia with support from the Government House Foundation and the Jack Webster Foundation, was established to support excellence in community focused journalism.
This year’s recipients; Amanda Follett Hosgood of The Tyee and Tchadas Leo of CHEK News, represent the best of journalism in the public interest. Their projects speak directly to issues at the heart of UNA-Canada’s mission: reconciliation, climate resilience, accountability, and the rights of underserved communities to be heard.
Meet the Fellows
Amanda Follett Hosgood is The Tyee’s northern B.C. reporter, based in Smithers, with 24 years of experience covering the region. A two-time winner of the Canadian Association of Journalists/APTN Truth and Reconciliation Award (2023 and 2024), Follett Hosgood brings rigorous, community-rooted journalism to stories that national media often overlooks. Her fellowship project examines the collapse of local news in northeast B.C. and the consequences for communities when credible, local information disappears.
Tchadas Leo is a multimedia journalist, podcaster, and filmmaker at CHEK News, and the first Coast Salish person to anchor a newscast on Coast Salish territory. His Indigenous lineage belongs with the Xwemalhkwu First Nation and the Stillaguamish Tribe of Indians. A 2024 RTDNA Canada Emerging Journalist Award recipient and 2025 CAJ/JHR Emerging Indigenous Journalist Award winner, recognized for his reporting on the deteriorating road access to Ditidaht First Nation. Leo’s fellowship project investigates how aging infrastructure, climate vulnerability, and limited emergency access leave remote First Nations communities in B.C. exposed to serious public-safety risks.
