Welcome to the Expedition Guide to Youth Agenda 2002! We are glad to have you along and are eager to share with you the ups and downs of the journey we call Youth Agenda 2002.

This expedition travels caringly upon the Earth to promote the respect and responsibility we all have towards each other and the natural world. It began in March 2001 when a group of young people in Canada got together to form the Youth Summit Team (YST) and chart a course in support of action for sustainable development in Canada. One of the stops along the way was the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg, South Africa, but this is only one part of the trip.

We have much more to share with you in this guide. It is our hope that this guide will:

  • Inspire you to work with others for positive changes in your society.
  • Transmit to you a sense of the tremendous energy that youth brought to the World Summit on Sustainable Development 2002 and give you an idea of how we channeled that energy.
  • Communicate to you our challenges, lessons learned and accomplishments so that it may guide the development and coordination of future youth projects.
  • Provide you with insight into the opportunities offered by an international event to engage youth and advance work at the local, provincial and national levels.

So please keep going. Through the chronicles of this expedition, you will venture up mountains, across streams and along several winding footpaths. We guarantee you'll experience both serene moments under shaded forests as well as thrilling, turbulent white waters!
