At the United Nations Millennium Summit in September
2000, world leaders committed to work together to mobilize
the energy and capacity of the international community, to meet a series
of targets to reduce poverty and inequality and
named these the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The goals are to:
- Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
- Achieve universal primary education
- Promote gender equality and empower women
- Reduce child mortality
- Improve maternal health
- Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
- Ensure environmental sustainability
- Develop a global partnership for development
These goals are linked to measurable targets, such as
cutting in half the proportion of people living in extreme poverty,
halving the proportion of people without access to safe drinking water,
and reducing by two thirds the mortality rate of
children under five - all by 2015.
