Linking Domestic and International Human Rights into the 21st Century

Brief Description: The 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights coincides with the 10th anniversary of U of T's Human Rights programme. To celebrate the past achievements of the Programme and guide it into the future, three exciting days of conference sessions are planned. The conference aims to bring together human rights advocates from governmental and non-governmental organizations, law firms, law schools, and the private sector. The 15 scheduled panel discussions include topics such as; Linking Global Economic Integration and Labour Rights, Transnational Litigation and Human Rights and The Future of Women’s Human Rights. The keynote speakers will be; Professor Harold Koh, Schell Center for Human Rights, Yale and Madame Justice Louise Arbour, Chief Prosecutor, International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the Former Yugoslavia.

World Food Day Teleconference

Brève description: The fifteenth annual World Food Day Satellite Teleconference on October 16th will focus on the right to food. The topic was chosen both as part of the observance of the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and to highlight the call for the right to food in the World Food Summit Declaration and Plan of Action. The program will be broadcast live via satellite to receive sites at colleges and other institutions across the United States and throughout the world to U.S. Embassies and national networks.

Millions of viewers will hear from a panel of international experts discussing whethere food for all should be a right or only a goal and why various positions on this basic question are held. "Doin' the "Rights" Stuff" Youth Contest

Brief Description: This is a Human Rights contest for youth aimed at encouraging the most creative artisitc expression of the expression of human rights. There are three submission categories: literary, visual and performance; and four age groups, with three awards for each eage group (11-13, 14-15, 16-19, 20-25). A total of 36 cash prizes of $125 each will be awarded at a special ceremony on or near Dec. 10th, 1998. Selected entrant's projects will be displayed and/or presented to the public.

Suggested themes include various rights; diverse cultures; injustices suffered by ethno-racial groups. The contest is open to all youth resident in Canada, regardless of immigration status.

“Partnerships and Participation in Telecommunications for Rural Development: Exploring What Works and Why”

Brief Description: This is a conference that will focus in telecommunication technology for participatory rural development in the Canadian context. It also looks at how lessons learned in Canada might be applied by people in other countries, and how lessons learned in other countries might be applied in Canada. The conference has two components. One is a 3 week online pre-conference which is free and open to everyone, and will provide opportunities to discuss past, present and future uses of communication technology in rural areas. Areas of interest identified during the virtual discussions will be examined at the face-to-face conference within the contexts of Reviewing the Past, Generating Results, Future Directions and Measuring Impact. The face-to-face conference on campus at the University of Guelph will consist of four half-day workshops designed to generate specific recommendations to enhance rural telecommunication project planning. The keynote speaker at the conference will be Iqbal Quadir, a founder of Grameen Telecom which is a company dedicated to bringing the information revolution to the rural people of Bangladesh.
