Description:As well as promoting lectures, the Forum is the occasion at which an individual is presented with the McGill-InterAmicus Human Rights Award.
This year the organzers hope to recognize someone who, by word or deed, has advanced the struggle for human rights in our time, and who has given expression, and example,
of the values underlying the Universal Declaration. Suggestions for recipients are warmly welcomed. Previous award winners have included Carmen Quintana, the courageous
young chilean student who was almost burned to death by Chilean death squads, and who was the first recipient in 1987; three native women who helped galvanize the cause
of aboriginal women's rights in Canada and beyond - Mary Two-Axe Earley, Jeanette Lavell, and Sandra Lovelace; the first Director of the War Crimes and Crimes Against
Humanity Unit of the Department of Justice, William Hobson; and Bassem Eid, the courageous Palestinian human rights activist and founder of the Palestinian Human Rights
Monitoring Group in East Jerusalem. |
