Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The year 1998 marks the 50th Anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly. To recognize this landmark event, the United Nations Association in Canada, in partnership with the Department of Canadian Heritage, is acting as a clearinghouse to facilitate commemorative activities across the country.

CREDO Logo The Department of Canadian Heritage is responsible for the promotion of human rights in Canada, and is coordinating the year long commemoration of the 50th anniversary, which extends officially from 10 December 1997 to 10 December 1998.

We hope that you and/or members of your organization will join in participating in different activities that will seek to underscore the importance of the Declaration and human rights, both globally and in Canada. Any activity, large or small, is important. To get more information on the different ways you can commemorate the 50th Anniversary, consult A Common Agenda—an ideas bank of 101 activities. It is drawn from a report entitled Promises to Keep, the result of a cross-Canada consultation that was conducted to consider options for raising awareness and understanding about the Declaration.

If you want more information on upcoming events we encourage you to visit our National Calendar of Events or, call our Human Rights Project Officer at the (613) 232-5751.
