Human Rights Conference

Brief Description: The League for Human Rights will host a national conference on human rights issues in Canada, with a special emphasis on issues of direct concern to Saskatchewan. The conference will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The conference will draw on the latest expertise of Canadian delegates in the areas of human rights work in a variety of areas, especially grass roots activities to promote human rights in Saskatchewan and Canada. The League for Human Rights invites proposals for plenary or workshop sessions from individuals and groups. The League is especially interested in human rights activities where grass roots action can be used to promote human rights as well as combating all forms of racism and anti-semitism.

If you would like to submit a topic for a session, the deadline is September 15, 1998 to:

Human Rights Day Celebration

Brief Description: The second annual International Human Rights Day celebration will take place at Lawrence Square Mall on Sunday December 6 between noon and 5 p.m. This event is being sponsored by Lawrence Heights Area Alliance in co-operation with the management of Lawrence Square Mall, which is located on Lawrence Ave. West at the Allen Expressway in Toronto. The day's activities will consist of a variety of entertainment such as bands, dancers and choral groups and special guest speakers. Last year, a special citizenship court was held as part of the celebration during which fifty people became new citizens of Canada. Also, the Coalition has reserved rooms in hotels near the International Civil Aviation Organization which will offer discounts if rooms are reserved before November 6th. International Students Conference at UN Headquarters

Brief Description: The conference will include a plenary, where the participants will draft and adopt their own Declaration and then at a formal session will present it to the United Nations. Schools must register by 15 October 1998 to be placed on the roster of participants. Each school must also hold their own mini-UN conference on human rights to choose two persons to represent the school at the UN conference. Students grades 9-12 are eligible to participate. All travel arrangements must be made by participating schools. To register, a school official should send a letter or E-mail with name and mailing address of the school and responsible teacher addressing intent to attend the conference.
