Who we are and a bit of history

The United Nations Association in Canada (UNA-Canada) is a national organization that has been serving Canadians from coast, to coast, to coast for over 60 years. We are part of the World Federation of UN Associations (WFUNA) and as such, we play the role of "the People’s Movement of the United Nations". Our mandate is to simply bring the UN closer to Canadians. More info on the organization can be found in the side bar menu under "About UNAC"

From its very creation, Diversity and Anti-Racism issues have been at the basis of UN concerns. For over a decade UNA-Canada has been developing resources, research methods and solutions to these global questions that affect each and every one of us. Culture, acceptance, integration, belonging, tolerance, are profound words that echo emotion, history and action.

Over the years, UNA-Canada has built a reputation for conceptualizing and implementing innovative projects, such as Youth for Diversity (YFD), Integration & Belonging (I&B) and A Sense of Belonging (SB). These projects have successfully engaged communities across Canada, identified gaps and challenges in addressing diversity issues, created networks of youth, emerging community leaders and community group representatives, and developed community action plans addressing racism and diversity issues at local levels.

Our projects had many successes and helped develop the body of knowledge necessary to understand, identify and take action. Not only did they generate insights into the challenges facing integration efforts in Canadian cities, but they also helped find and build resources and strategies that community members can use to overcome those challenges. Based on the principles of open dialogue and respect, these projects provided participants the opportunity to explore their personal identities and relationship to a wider Canadian identity, and to come together to work for change in their communities. In generating greater social capital and bonding, the projects made important inroads for social cohesion in Canada.

Despite the successes of these projects, the process of building stronger communities and a more inclusive society has only just begun. In order to maintain the momentum of earlier projects of YFD and I&B, the SB project sought out to implement action plans that were developed. As our continued research and understanding grows one thing is becoming more and more apparent. For one to belong, one must be Ready to Belong. Nothing is a given, trust, acceptance and tolerance takes work and is a 2 way street. Here, communication is our best friend.
