Veterans Tour
UNA-Canada’s Veteran Speaking Tour coincided with the series of public dialogues on UN Peacekeeping. The Speaking Tour took place in several cities across Canada, through the fall of 2006 and winter 2007. This tour was the first of its kind, bringing together both police and military veterans to educate youth about UN peacekeeping. The Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping, along with the International Policing department of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police identified former peacekeepers as speakers for this activity. In addition, Emily Schroeder, UNA-Canada project officer and a former civilian UN Volunteer with the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Sudan, also made a presentation. The target audience for this activity is high school students.
This youth engagement activity provided an opportunity for veterans of UN peacekeeping from the military and police to address a high school class or assembly in that location on their peacekeeping experiences. This provided an important education function for young Canadians to hear the stories and see faces of former UN peacekeepers, thereby better understanding the important contribution Canadian peacekeepers are making overseas. The cities for the speaking tour included: Halifax, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Victoria and Toronto.
