Canadian Coalition for Peace
The
International Year for the Culture of Peace:
A turning point, Not an event
A working group has been established to promote and
coordinate Canadian activities during the International
Year for the Culture of Peace. This group is made up of
different associations from all across Canada. The aim of
the working group is to create synergy between its
members so as to inform all Canadians about the
International Year for the Culture of Peace. A plan of
action now needs to be developed for the coming year.
The aim
of this group is to make this year much more than an
event, hence the slogan. In fact, the member
associations, in keeping with UNESCO objectives, would
like to make the year 2000 one of the key moments for
launching a world movement for the culture of peace and
non-violence. The working group also wishes to establish
a link with the International Decade for a Culture of
Peace and Non-violence for the Children of the World
(2001-2010) as well as with the Year 2001 which
is the United Nations Year of Dialogue
among Civilizations. In so doing, different
educational, information, awareness, mobilization and
prevention activities will be organized here and there
throughout Canada. The Canadian Commission for UNESCO
will soon be launching a kit that will regroup all these
activities and showcase the contributions of various
Canadian groups in their effort to construct a culture of
peace.
