Event Name: Culture of Peace News and Media Network (CPNN)

Brief Description: Around the world, there is increasing concern with the amount of violence depicted in the media. This initiative aims at developing an interest for peace and at building a culture of peace in the media. The objective is to develop a network of internet sites that provide information about local actions and media productions for a culture of peace and non-violence. The content will be from visitors and will be edited by trained moderators (internet editors) in order to create positive debate. It is hoped such a network will increase popular demand for peace news and media.

Event Name: Culture of Peace and Non-violence Poster Contest
Date: From January 30th to July 1, 2000

Brief Description: The ideas for Peace and Non-Violence, symbolizing the keys to the doors of the third millennium, should be presented on posters that contain a drawing along with an allegorical slogan. The technique used as well as the size of the poster are free, computerized drawings being accepted as well. Participants may include students and teachers and educational institutions from any country in any of the official United Nations languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, English Spanish and Russian.An international jury will select the best entries which will be included in an Exhibition on Culture of Peace and Non-Violence in the Third Millennium. The winners will be awarded with honourary diplomas and two money prizes. You may even win a trip to the United Nations.

Event Name: International contest for peace

Brief Description: ADIPPEM is organizing a contest open to everyone from 17 to 25. The participants have to write in French an essay of 3 or 4 pages about one of the three following topics:

1/ “the peace of the heart is the paradise of men”. Plato
2/ “the only means of obliging the men to say good of us is to make some”. Voltaire
3/ “One would not be lead to peace with the only means of treaties. This one must be built in the spirit of each citizen”. Federico Mayor, General manager of UNESCO
Each essay must mention the name, the address, and the telephone number of the candidate. The winner will be offered a trip to France from July 14 to 31, 2000.

Event Name: Women Building Peace Campaign

Brief Description: "Women Building Peace: From the Village Council to the Negotiating Table" is an international campaign that aims to highlight women's role in peacebuilding through partnership and participation; impacting policy; public awareness and the award of a peace prize. to create pressure on decision-makers at the United Nations and visualise the broad support for its aims, Women Building Peace has initiated a postcard campaign, addressed to UN SG Kofi Annan. The Postcard highlights five key demands:
- Include women in peace negotiations as decision-makers
- Put women at the heart of reconstruction and reconciliation
- Strengthen the protection and representation of refugee and displaced women
- End impunity for crimes committed against women and ensure redress
- Give women and women's organisations the support and resources they need to build peace
The target is 250 000 signatures by end November 2000 !!!. To join the campaign, you can obtain leaflets which are available in English, French, Spanish, Russian and Chinese. You can order some leaflets with the postcard attached, circulate the electronic version and put it on your website.

Brief Description: By signing the Manifesto 2000 each of us can take the first step of engagement in the Global Movement for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence. As a second step,we can make the Manifesto 2000 known to our family, workplace, friends and community to give others the same opportunity of engagement. You can become a " Messenger of the Manifesto 2000 ". As soon as you have collected 100 signatures, you will receive an official certificate by e-mail. If enough people become Messengers, then the Movement for a Culture of Peace and Non-violence can become a reality on a global scale. To register your signatures, you need to fill in a form online at the address below. A similar initiative also exists for organizations. Participating organizations will be allowed to insert their own logo on the promotional materials provided by UNESCO and to be listed as a Messenger of the Manifesto 2000 on the Internet Website of the International Year for the Culture of Peace.

Event Name: 100 New Songs for Peace

Brief Description: The project is to collect,transcribe, publish and distribute a book of "100 New Songs for Peace". The collection is an official project of the United National Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO) to promote the International Year for a Culture of Peace. The works will be used during the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World (2001-2010). 100 New Songs of Peace is endorsed by UNESCO, the Hague Appeal for Peace, Philip Glass, composer, the Woodie Guthrie Foundation, The Soka Gakkai, International,the International Holistic Tourism Education Centre, The Campaign for the Earth International and the Creative Vocalization Studio. All writers retain their own copyright.
