Event Name:

WHITHER THE GLOBAL NUCLEAR NON-PROLIFERATION REGIME?

Date:

29 June 2000

Organization:

Canadian Council for International Peace and Security

Event Location:

The seminar will be held in the Astra Lounge (first floor), RCAF Officers Mess, 158 Gloucester St., Ottawa, from 0900 - 1130

Brief Description:

From 24 April to 19 May 2000, representatives of nearly 190 States parties gathered in New York for the Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT). This review came five years after the 1995 Review and Extension Conference. Many non-nuclear weapons states felt that the promises made in 1995 have not been kept and point to the refusal of the US Senate to ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty as a case in point. There were significant challenges for the Review Conference to address: the 1998 nuclear explosive tests by India and Pakistan, the continuing United Nations stand-off with Iraq, suspicions of DPRK intentions, and those of other rogue states, and the possible development of a US national missile defence system in contravention of the ABM Treaty, all impact negatively on non-proliferation norms. What occurred at the Review Conference? Who were the principle players and what was achieved? More importantly, what are the implications for nuclear non-proliferation, nuclear disarmament and peaceful uses for the next five years?
