Mandate: Each year, the Forum for Young Canadians brings more than 500 senior high school and CEGEP students from across Canada to the nation’s capital to learn first hand how government works. It is a programme of the Foundation for the Study of Processes of Government in Canada. There are four main components to the Forum Programme: 1)General overview; 2) Talks on particular aspects of government in Canada, such as the Cabinet or the role of a member of Parliament, presented by individuals who are active in public life and include a question and answer period; 3)Group discussions; and simulations of a mock election, a Cabinet committee, a question period in the House of Commons and a federal-provincial conference. 4)Other sessions explore relationships between the government and the press, citizens’ groups, business and labour. Forum’s young Canadians live and work together in an atmosphere of friendship and warmth. They discuss, probe and debate. They sing, dance, talk and laugh together. It is a week of learning about the country and its leaders, about the machinery of government and about what it means to be Canadian.

Our current project will take us to Costa Rica to share with youth there some video technology. We will make videos with them on environmental and socially relevant themes. Next year is a youth symposium on the topic of water. We export water to the US under a special trade agreement, and youth want to understand the issues.
