HIGH SCHOOL MODEL UN

Engaging youth in the discussions of tomorrow

This program is working towards:

The United Nations Association in Canada uses its expertise and years of experience to implement the most realistic Model UN conferences on the continent.

The format and processes of UNA-Canada’s conferences are designed to resemble the actual United Nations as closely as possible, offering educational fora for young scholars to engage in current international issues and challenges, and to develop the skills, tools and knowledge required to become future leaders. This approach allows delegates to place a focus on one’s own diplomatic, deliberation and policy-making skills.

The United Nations Association in Canada offers training, conferences, and support services to high schools across Canada who are interested in Model UN.

With partnership packages ranging from small pilot Model UN sessions to full-scale Model UN team activities, UNA-Canada's UN experts can provide any of the following:

  • MUN 101: a training session for students, covering Model UN basics, delivered at a pace and timing suited to your school's schedule and students needs

  • MUN Training Series: a number of training sessions for students, spaced out over the academic year; recommended for schools with Model UN teams

  • MUN for Teachers: a workshop for teachers on the basics of Model UN and how to set up a team at your school

  • CANIMUN coordination: bypass all the logistical coordination and registration efforts by organizing your school’s trip to CANIMUN through UNA-Canada directly

  • Conference Services: Host a conference of your own with the help and staff of UNA-Canada. Conferences can be arranged to accommodate groups between 20 and 200 and can take place over 1, 2, 3, or 4 days.

What is Model UN?

Model United Nations is a student conference that enacts simulations of real UN bodies. Participants, or 'delegates', are assigned a country to represent and a committee in which to represent it. That committee will have pre-selected topics and a background guide, providing context and necessary details to encourage deep engagement with the issue. During the conference, delegates engage in moderated discussion to address their selected topics with the aim of creating a resolution: a substantive policy document modelled after real UN resolutions.

Model United Nations (MUN) is, for many people, their first introduction to the work done by the United Nations on a diplomatic level. While there is a general understanding that the UN is involved in human rights, development, and peacekeeping internationally, the scope of the organization comes as a surprise to many. The point of these simulations is to encourage young people to grow into global citizens – truly engaged and involved in work to better the lives of all people.

The simulation approach allows students of all levels to learn about international issues in a hands-on, empathy-based environment. Committee discussions, moderated by people with extensive knowledge of the topics, allow students to explore and ask questions about the issues, debate with their peers, and practice their diplomacy, negotiation, and teamwork skills. Students who participate in Model UN, both at the high school and university levels, report having a better understanding of international relations, more engagement with academic topics, broadened perspective on international issues, and more motivation to get involved in their communities.

Why UNA-Canada?

With 15 years’ experience running the largest bilingual conference in Canada, the Canadian International Model United Nations Conference (CANIMUN), UNA-Canada is at the forefront of engaging youth in pressing global issues and diplomacy through Model Assemblies and Simulations

UNA-Canada currently partners with several high schools in Canada to deliver training and host conferences. Are you a student or teacher that wants to learn more about MUN and host your own trainings and conferences?

Programme Testimonials

This year I had the opportunity to attend many initiatives by the United Nation Association in Canada which I am so grateful for! I met some of the brightest future leaders of our country, and some of them were just in high school. I have learned and work towards gaining more knowledge and experience on leadership and global change. Thank you to United Nations Association of Canada for holding extraordinary opportunities for youth in Canada to engage in diplomacy and global leadership!
