The Child Health Action Manual (CHAM)
will take you through five stages of knowledge exchange and activities related to the creation of Healthy Children, Healthy Community Action Plans.
Each section is color coded and clearly outlines the goals and objectives and provides you with all the necessary information for youth engagement. The activities proposed in each section allow you to tackle complex issues in a youth friendly way and create plans for positive change with great flexibility. Follow the steps and choose examples, discussion topics and activities that will best suit your group’s needs and interests. In this manual, you will find the following five (5) sections:
1. Meeting Logistics If you are a pro at youth facilitation, you may not need to heavily rely on this section, but if getting youth together for a meeting about a discussion as serious as their health is new to you, this section is definitely for you! It provides helpful hints and advice on holding effective youth meetings, from tips on effective facilitation to setting an agenda, this will provide you with all of the info you need to convene your meeting.
2. Framing Rights and Health Engaging youth through the process of understanding personal and community health is an exercise in Child Rights. Article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child tells us that youth must be consulted on the matters which affect them. This section offers useful information on those rights as well as on health from a social determinants perspective.
3. Identifying Issues This section guides you through activities to engage youth in talking about health issues from a holistic perspective. Here, you may find ideas about health you may not have considered before!
4. Identifying Solutions This section encourages youth to think creatively about ways in which they would solve health problems/concerns.
5. Getting your voice heard Perhaps the most important section in the manual. This section gives you advice on how to create an Action Plan with your youth and how to get your action plan heard at the community level.
Try out some activities and use their results to communicate your issues, concerns and solutions.
