World AIDS Day is an opportunity for all of us to improve our awareness of the AIDS epidemic and support efforts to stem its growth and find a cure. This year’s theme revolves around involving men in the solutions. Possible activities are numerous and include the following:
- Invite speakers living with HIV/AIDS to give testimonies of their experiences with the disease at school assemblies in order to give a human face to the AIDS epidemic and bring home the reality of AIDS.
- Women - encourage men in your life to reflect on how men can be part of the solution in stopping the spread of AIDS.
- Men – find out what you can do to support the 2000 World Aids Campaign.
- Prepare special reports and/or letters to the editors on HIV/AIDS that can be included in editions of local magazines and newspapers, as well as school papers.
- Contact the local media and ask them to cover stories related to the global AIDS epidemic.
- Organize a luncheon or dinner with a speaker or group of speakers to raise funds for organizations involved in helping people living with AIDS
- Organize candlelight marches through busy areas to remind people of the AIDS epidemic.
- Wear a red ribbon as a sign of commitment to AIDS issues.
- Observe a moment of silence for the victims of AIDS and in support of efforts to stem the spread of the disease and cure it.
- Explore organizations and/or institutions that offer services to people living with AIDS in your community and determine ways you can support their work.
