(October 24th, 2006, Ottawa) The United Nations Association
in Canada (UNA-Canada), through its branches
and regional contacts across Canada, celebrates 61 years of multilateralism
and an Organization that is active in peacekeeping, disarmament, economic
development, environmental preservation, education and disease prevention.
Across Canada, engaged citizens have activities planned in their
regions to mark UN Day and reaffirm the idea of "We the Peoples".

at the corner of Pender and Burrard Streets in the morning. |

Calgary - will have a flag raising ceremony at City Hall and
a civic proclamation of UN Day, and is partnering with World University
Service of Canada and the University of Calgary to present Shanti
Day on campus - with a focus on the Millenium Development Goals
campaign. |

Edmonton - will host a Public Panel discussion at Grant MacEwan
College to highlight the 50th Anniversary of UN Peacekeeping entitled
Building Local Capacity: Integrating Sustainable Strategies.

Saskatoon - the city has declared UN Day and there is a reception
in the evening for UNA members and the public at Mayfair United
Church. |

Winnipeg - will hold its annual event at the Legislature that
will take place on November 5th. |

Hamilton - in collaborating with the Hamilton Culture of Peace
Network in an evening presentation at Robert Land School - the
Right to an Adequate Standard of Living in Hamilton- with Craig
Foyle, staff lawyer at McQuestion Legal & Community Services.

Toronto - morning flag raising at City Hall, followed by an
evening event in the City Hall rotunda with display tables for
a number of NGO organizations and a focus on peacekeeping and
the experiences of Gerry O'Pray, who saw service in the Congo.

Quinte - will be honouring 50 years of UN Peacekeeping with
an event taking place at CFB Trenton. |

Quebec - the branch will holding a community event/seminar at
Laval University. |

Ottawa - Nepean Outlook on the World has an event to mark UN
Day and raise funds in support of an orphanage in Bo, Sierre Leone.

Antigonish - UNA-Canada's Healthy Children, Healthy Communites
(HC2) project is involved in a community roundtable with children,
at the Antigonish Education Centre/Academy. |
UNA-Canada is a national charitable organization celebrating
its landmark 60th anniversary. As a 'think and do' organization, UNA-Canada
supports a network of 17 volunteer branches and local contacts, with
a National Office in Ottawa and a Western professional office in Vancouver.
Our mandate is to engage Canadians in the work of the UN and the critical
global issues which affect us all, through innovative projects, policy
research, and on-going communications with Canadians.
