Transition Towards Peace and Democracy

Poland

"... we do believe deeply that our experience of the last decade shows that nations can move away from authoritarianism, through negotiations-- what we called round-table negotiations-- to then successfully build a democratic system based on the rule of law, individual freedoms, freedom of economic enterprise and political democracy."

Ireland

The Good Friday Agreement of 10 April 1998 marks a historic new beginning for Norther Ireland and the South and Britain. After 40 years, "we have begun the long walk out of the dark night of division and conflict..." The Agreement, which strikes a parity between pain and gain on both sides, could not have come about without trust and vision. It may serve as a blueprint for the resolution of other conflicts.

El Salvador

"... Profound transformations have taken place in El Salvador, resulting in the replacement of authoritarianism, abuse of power and impunity by a system founded on strict respect for the law and the principles and values of democracy." We will comply fully with the Peace Accords.

Guatemala

Internally, the recent Peace Agreements finally put an end to the fratricidal struggle that has continued in Guatemala for nearly 40 years. The U.N., the Government and the People of Guatemala have worked together to implement the Peace Accords. "Under the United Nations Verification Mission in Guatemala (MINUGUA) we have gone forward with firm and sure steps in complying with the Accords..." Pays tribute to seven U.N. persons killed in tragic air crash en route to remote area to verify the fulfillment of Accords.

A comment from me, the man who made this sample. If you have read through all this, you will have an impression of how many disparate parochial concerns converge on common global issues. Here and there, too, you will have seen flashes of real people standing out from the diplomatic crowd. A person can make a difference.
