Middle East

Iran (President Mohammad Khatami)

Against the dismal background of wars and repression in our time, things are getting better since the collapse of the bipolar world. Nations can affirm their identities. No super-power can rule the world.

"The Islamic revolution of the Iranian people was a revolt of reason against coercion and repression."

Proposes 2001 as "Year of Dialogue among Civilizations."

Over 1 billion Muslims deserve a permanent seat on the Security Council.

Palestinians - Muslims, Christians, Jews - have the right to sovereignty over their ancient land. The U.N. and the Organization of the Islamic Conference should get factions together for a political solution in Afghanistan.

Iran opposes all forms of terrorism.

Security based on nuclear weapons is an illusion.

Men and women are different, but men are not better than women. Active participation of women and men is necessary for the full development of society.

Egypt

Time for historical assessment of this past century and aspirations for the future.

Touches on terror, disarmament, the Security Council, Iraq, Israel, Africa.

President Mubarak supports the NAM proposal for the U.N. to convene a summit meeting on all aspects of terrorism.

U.N. should be clear when applying sanctions: Why? How long?

International effort required to salvage the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, now stalled by Israel's intransigence.

Israel (Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu)

The U.N. created the State of Israel.

"... the bond between the people of Israel and the land of Israel is eternal..."

No people wants peace more than we do. I have two small children at home...

Peace can be achieved with the Palestinians on the basis of security and reciprocity.

Palestinian Authority (Chairman Yasser Arafat)

Since fifty years the Palestinian people, guilty of no crime or aggression, have been displaced by force from their homeland. Four million of them are still living in camps. Nevertheless, we have decided to negotiate with Israel on the lines of the Oslo Accords (1993). The peace process was going ahead until Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated. Since then, Israel has backed away from its Oslo commitments, which envisaged an eventual State of Palestine. We are eager to declare this State when the 5-year Oslo transition runs out on 4 May 1999.

The U.N. remains responsible for the question of Palestine. It is our desire that Israel will accept the 1967 determination of the Security Council concerning land occupied by Israel.

Syria

The peace process is stalled because Israel rejects the formula of land for peace.

Jordan

Israel should stop using security risks as an excuse for halting the peace process.

Jordan has long been responsible for the Holy Places in Jerusalem. Israel should do nothing on its own to affect the status of Jerusalem and should stop aggressive acts against Palestinians.

Dialogue between religions is the best way to avert hostility.

Iraq must comply with Security Council decisions but sanctions need to be reconsidered since they are hurting the people. Jordan has suffered enormous economic loss from these sanctions.
