September 16, 2000 is International Ozone Day. International action to protect the ozone layer was first undertaken in 1985 with the adoption of the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer. The adoption of the Montreal Protocol in 1987 really marked a commitment to eliminate the production of ozone depleting substances (ODS). The Montreal Protocol is considered today to be one of the most successful conventions to date. However, much work remains to be done to ensure the complete phase out of ODS. As of 1999, developing countries have started to cut down on ODS, contributing significantly to the protection of the ozone layer. Join in the celebration by taking action in your community, your business, your organization and/or your home, to preserve the ozone layer.
