Executive Director’s Message

Dear members and friends of UNA-Canada,

Our greatest challenge for 1998 remains the same as for 1997—to continue to educate, to inform and to involve Canadians, young and old. Citizen’s movements such as ours, which support the United Nations and a strong Canadian role in the UN, are more vital than ever.

UNA-Canada places high priority on keeping in touch with its members and supporters. We have discovered that one of the best ways of making sure that our work always corresponds to the interests and preoccupations of our members is through our annual informal membership poll. In past years, this polling has led us to concentrate efforts on such areas as: the problem of child labour in the developing world; the undermining of the UN by countries that don’t pay their assessments; and the wanton destruction caused by landmines. The 1997 poll was a key tool in helping orient ongoing programmes for membership awareness and general advocacy.

In 1998, we will continue to ensure that our organization remains as responsive, efficient and as effective as possible. We will continue to offer you a window into the work of the UN through our Newsletters and web site; our Action Guides and fact sheets; and our internship programme and issue-related Projets. We will strive to produce more relevant policy-analysis and opinion pieces for Canada’s decision-makers and leaders. And we will seek to ensure that our Branches are stronger and more numerous, and continue to be the "voice of Canada and all Canadians". Through your interest, you will help us shape that work.

There is no doubt that we have accomplished a lot in 1997—we continue to build a stronger and more dynamic organization, and to forge a greater presence in the minds of Canadians. However, we still have a long way to go.

Thanks to all of you who, this year, entrusted us with your financial support, your volunteer leadership, and your endorsement. We will continue to work for a world of peace, equity, and justice in which the United Nations plays a key role.

Yours sincerely,

Harry Qualman
