The following projects and programmes have wound down, but many produced resource materials that are still relevant.


Model IJC
100 years ago, Canada and the United States signed the Boundary Waters Treaty creating the International Joint Commission (IJC) changing the way these two countries would settle disputes along the water borders thereafter. The United Nations Association in Canada invites you, on the 100th anniversary of the Treaty, to join university-level students from Canada and the United States on June 11-13 2009 to simulate and respond to the numerous challenges that face one of the world’s most prestigious multilateral governing body, the International Joint Commission. 2009

Healthy Children, Healthy Communities
Our Healthy Children, Healthy Communities project focuses on the healthy development of Canadian 9-12 year olds. Children (aged 9-12) and child health experts exchange knowledge about social factors that can have a positive or negative impact on their health – factors such as poverty, education, housing, violence, the environment, or racism. In their communities, participants create action plans to ensure that their priorities are included in health initiatives in their schools and communities, as well as at the national and international levels. Includes Talking Back To Grownups – a report on the social determinants of health and middle childhood in Canada. 2006 - 2009

A Sense of Belonging
A Sense of Belonging aims to promote diversity and combat racism and discrimination in local communities across Canada through community outreach and public education. UNA-Canada's overall goal is to support participation and opportunities for minority groups and promote fulsome and equal participation in Canadian society. Includes About Face: Toolkit for Community Collaboration on Diversity and Understanding and Engaging the Media for NGOs. 2006 - 2008.

Youth of Today, City of Tomorrow
The goal of the project is to utilize a series of research papers commissioned by Western Economic Diversification (WD) surrounding the issues of sustainability that will be addressed at third World Urban Forum (WUF 3). This project will raise awareness and elicit active community participation at WUF 3, while fostering a legacy of understanding in young Western Canadians on human settlement issues and the ability of their communities to address these issues. 2006-2007.

Pearson's Nobel Peace Prize, 50th Anniversary : 1957-2007
It has been fifty years since a remarkable Canadian - Lester Bowles Pearson - was honoured with the 1957 Nobel Peace Prize for his vision, wisdom, perseverance and skillful success in establishing an international police force to resolve the 1956 Suez Crisis.

Peacekeeping 50: 1956-2006
2006 marks the 50th anniversary of the Suez Crisis and the world's first designated UN peacekeeping mission. It is a year not only to celebrate and more deeply value Canada's lasting contribution to a more peaceful world, but to encourage Canadians to continue to support peace, development, diplomacy and global citizenship. HIV/AIDS: It's Time to Act - Mobilizing Young Canadians Around HIV/AIDS
An intra- and inter- national/provincial youth participation and cooperation project that addresses HIV/AIDS in conjunction with the social determinants of health, in order to build capacity to combat HIV/AIDS through sustainable prevention, education and management strategies. The project includes Canadian regional youth forums in 2005-06; 'twinning' partnerships with youth in countries where HIV is endemic; a national youth survey; and participation in the XVI International Conference on AIDS in Toronto in August 2006. 2005-2007

Internship Programmes
The Young Professionals International (YPI) and the International Youth Internship Programmes (IYIP) are employment programmes which are a part of the Federal Government's Youth Employment Strategy. The programmes, implemented and coordinated by UNA-Canada, offer Canadian university and college graduates valuable first paid career related work experiences in a United Nations (or UN-related) setting. 1997 - 2007

UNA-Canada is organizing a number of activities, events and short video PSAs to mark the anniversary, and to engage its partners and their constituencies in various regions across Canada in celebrating this milestone. Includes the Global Citizen Challenge.

Integration & Belonging
Integration & Belonging (I&B) is a national initiative focused on youth and emerging community leaders in five cities across Canada - Calgary, Saskatoon, Kingston, Montreal and St. John's. I&B identifies and builds the social capital of Canadian society to encourage cohesion and strengthen our sense of belonging. Includes a resource manual titled Building A Sense of Belonging: A Community Tool for Action. (2004-2005)

Youth for Diversity
The goal of Youth for Diversity was to engage youth from across Canada in diversity and leadership training, network capacity-building, and action through five Regional Forums in Sackville, Yellowknife, Winnipeg, Kamloops and Montreal (Aug 2003 - Jan 2004).

The Rights Stuff
The Rights Stuff project trained groups of young Canadians from diverse backgrounds so that they develop an in-depth understanding of their rights and freedoms as stipulated in the Canadian Charter and are able to run their own workshops on these issues in their schools and communities. Training took place through five regional workshops in Moncton, Yellowknife, Winnipeg, Kamloops and Rimouski (Aug 2003 - Jan 2004).

Refugees: A Canadian Perspective
A set of resource guides for classroom teachers designed to increase the sensitivity of young Canadians to the plight of refugees and to the UN's involvement in refugee issues, as well as of Canada's support for refugee protection and assistance worldwide.

Mosaic
Mosaic is a national directory of success stories of youth-for-youth projects about sustainable development. On Mosaic you can learn more about projects developed by young Canadians who are effectively addressing social, economic, cultural and environmental issues in their schools, communities, provinces and country. Youth & the Global HIV/AIDS Crisis
In their Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS (July 2001), UN Member States declared that young people’s “full involvement and participation in the design, planning, implementation and evaluation of programmes is crucial to the development of effective responses to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.” In response, UNA-Canada & Carleton University's School of Social Work produced a Youth Toolkit for Action. May 2002.

Youth Forums Against Racism (YFAR)
YFAR was an initiative of UNA-Canada launched in recognition of the United Nations International Year for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (2001). The end result of this project was an innovative, long-term, anti-racism education model & manual developed BY youth FOR youth! The KIT is available in PDF format.

Youth International Alumni Association
The site owes its existence to the suggestions of interns themselves who wanted to have a follow-up to their experiences. It is a place where YIIP participants can network with one another, share experiences and knowledge, and check out job opportunities. Maintained 2002-2003.

International Year of Older Persons
The United Nations proclaimed 1999 as the International Year of Older Persons. In order to recognize this, UNA-Canada launched a comprehensive website and produced a Resource Guide which was distributed to all secondary schools in Canada.

50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
The year 1998 marks the 50th Anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly. Produced an Action Guide on Human Rights which was distributed to all secondary schools in Canada.

Lester B. Pearson's Role in the Formation of the UN's Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) and in Other UN Activities
A research paper & educational outreach in 1997, marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of an extraordinary Canadian who had a remarkable career, both in Canadian politics and in the formation of a new world order which emerged during the final few years of World War II, including the creation of the United Nations organization and its various agencies.
