UNA-Canada Mourns the Loss of United Nations Employees in Iraq

The United Nations Association in Canada is deeply saddened by yesterday's tragic loss of life resulting from the bombing of the United Nations Headquarters in Iraq. The slaying of the UN Special Representative in Iraq and High Commissioner for Human Rights, Sergio de Vieira de Mello, is a terrible blow for the United Nations.

The horrendous attack is an affront to the values and principles of the UN and international cooperation. The specific targeting by terrorist elements of an organization and individuals dedicated to providing essential humanitarian assistance and preparing for a transition to self-governance is unacceptable and inexcusable.

UNA-Canada fully supports the decision of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to maintain a strong UN presence in Iraq and to intensify the organization's efforts to bring peace, security and full independence to the Iraqi people.

The staff, board, branches and members of UNA-Canada grieve with the families of all those who died in the Baghdad attack, and sends special condolences to the families of the two Canadians tragically killed in the assualt: Christopher Klein-Beekman, an employee of Unicef, and Gillian Clark of Christian Children's Fund.
