Letter to Prime Minister Chrétien on a War in Iraq

March 18, 2003

The Right Honourable Jean Chrétien
Prime Minister of Canada
80 Wellington Street
Ottawa, ON K1A 0A2

Dear Prime Minster Chrétien:

The United Nations Association in Canada is deeply concerned about the prospect of a war in Iraq without the sanction of the United Nations.

We applaud the recent efforts of the Canadian Government to broker a compromise within the Security Council and regret that the Canadian proposal was not granted a more serious consideration.

We urge you to continue to exercise global leadership and to demonstrate respect for international law and the United Nations. We support your statement of 17 March in the House of Commons that the Canadian Government will not support any war effort - militarily, economically or politically - which does not have UN sanction. We urge you to stand firm on this position in the days and weeks to come.

At the same time, we request that Canada mobilize itself to respond quickly and decisively to the humanitarian crisis which will surely result from a war. Such a response will demonstrate Canada's firm commitment to human security and fundamental respect for the laws which govern our international system.

Sincerely,

Steve Mason
Executive Director
