UNA-Canada mourns the passing of Geoffrey Pearson, 19 March 2008

Former UNA-Canada President (1999-2003); Board Member (1995-2006); and a Friend of the Charter

The United Nations Association in Canada (UNA-Canada) joins with a vast community of Canadians in mourning the passing, on March 18th, 2008, of Geoffrey Arthur Holland Pearson, OC. We have lost a man who represented the very best this country offers to our own citizens, as well as to the global community as a whole. Through a lifetime of public service - first as a valued senior member of Canada's diplomatic service and then through his contributions to civil society organizations, including UNA-Canada and many others focused on disarmament and peace - he shared his insight and depth of knowledge and his pervasive commitment to the deep moral values which underlie the core of our humanity.

Geoffrey Pearson's life reflected values drawn from his own upbringing, along with those of the strong family he nurtured with his wife, Landon. He was proud to have written about his father (Lester B. Pearson) and his father's legacy with clarity, respect and good humour. He also always took immense pleasure in mentoring young Canadians who wished to understand and follow in the footsteps of service.

He will be greatly missed.
