Press Releases UNA-Canada Sends Yellowknife Students to Model United Nations 18 March 2002 - The United Nations Association of Canada [UNA-Canada] is pleased to welcome five Yellowknife high school students to the world of Model United Nations. Known as Team ArcticMUN, these students and their teacher will be travelling to Toronto to participate in one of Canada's largest high school Model United Nations simulations from 17-20 April, 2002. Hosting more than 600 students from across Canada and North America, the Southern Ontario Model United Nations Assembly [SOMA] is a conference that simulates the activities of specific UN organs, programmes, committees and agencies. Model UNs are exciting venues for participants to explore the challenges and rewards related to working in an international setting. A joint venture between UNA-Canada and Yellowknife's Sir John Franklin and Saint Patrick's High Schools, Team ArcticMUN is a new initiative for the north. Due to the remoteness of Yellowknife and the tremendous costs associated with travel, participation in national high school MUNs has seldom been an option for northern students. Now, with the help of UNA-Canada's Model UN Programme and the generous support of Yellowknife's Education District Number 1, northern high school students will surmount these barriers to set an important precedent for their peers.
