A World Without Weapons: Disarmament Education Programme

November 9, 2004 - The United Nations Association in Canada (UNA-Canada) and Lester B. Pearson Catholic High School in Ottawa are pleased to announce the official launch of A World Without Weapons: Disarmament Education Programme. The launch takes place this Tuesday November 9, 2004 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. at Lester B. Pearson Catholic High School 2072 Jasmine Crescent, Gloucester. This timely initiative was developed with the support of Foreign Affairs Canada, The Simons Foundation, and the Department of National Defence, to increase the level of knowledge and engagement in disarmament and non-proliferation issues among secondary school students across Canada.

The programme consists of two resources, a Teacher's Guide and an on-line Student's Manual, to enhance the achievement of the programme objective. The Teacher's Guide comprises lesson plans that aim to educate students on the various themes related to disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons worldwide. Themes include Landmines, Small Arms and Light Weapons, Nuclear Disarmament and non-proliferation, Chemical and Biological Weapons (CBW). The on-line Student's Manual contains interactive and engaging activities that demonstrate connections between local realities and global disarmament issues. Both resources are complemented with multimedia resources and lists of organizations actively dealing with disarmament, non-proliferation of weapons and human security. The resources also contain case studies that enhance critical thinking and empower students to act responsibly and ready students to participate in creating safe communities locally and globally. The resource will be available at www.unac.org/learn/wwwp
