Press Releases Advance Notice UNA-Canada to Host Seminar on Millennium Development Goals The United Nations Association in Canada will be hosting a seminar on the Human Development Report 2003, which focuses on the Millennium Development Goals and their progress. The event will take place in Ottawa on Wednesday, 19 November from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Volunteer Canada building located at 330 Gilmour (corner of O'Connor). The seminar aims to bring a variety of stakeholders together to examine Canada's role and responsibilities regarding the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The session is open to the general public at a fee of $10.00, which includes lunch and refreshments. All reservations must be made before November 17, 2003. The Millennium Development Goals commit the international community to an expanded vision of development. Arising from the historic Declaration at the United Nations' Millennium Summit in September 2000, they include eight goals - ranging from halving extreme poverty, to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS, to enrolling all boys and girls everywhere in primary school by 2015 - set in a framework for measuring development progress. By hosting a seminar on the 2003 Human Development Report, UNA-Canada hopes to bring more attention and awareness to Canada's role and responsibilities in attaining the MDGs. The seminar will highlight some of the challenges associated with the Goals, while examining how Canada can best contribute to their fulfillment. In doing so, the event will focus on the following three themes:
Each theme will involve two presenters, followed by an open discussion period with the audience. A keynote speaker from the World Bank will open the seminar.
