Press Releases UNA-Canada takes Model UN to Sri Lanka! 28 August 2003 - The United Nations Association in Canada (UNA-Canada), in conjunction with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the United Nations Association in Sri Lanka (UNA-SL), and the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides Associations of Sri Lanka are working to expand Model United Nations (MUN) activities and conferences throughout Sri Lanka. Jeronimo De Miguel, Project Manager of the MUN Programme at UNA-Canada, will facilitate a series of 9 Model UN seminars from 15-26 September 2003 across Sri Lanka. The seminars will take place in Colombo, Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Vavuniya, Anuradhapura, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ampara and Matara. The seminars are an integral part of a larger project known as SLMUN that strives to foster the growth of Model UN among primary and secondary school students in the island. "The SLMUN initiative is a powerful and exciting way to address the needs of young people in post-conflict and conflict areas," says Steve Mason, Executive Director of UNA-Canada. "While allowing students and teachers to expand educational opportunities, Model UN activities serve to develop crucial skills in cooperation, negotiation and conflict resolution that can play a crucial role in building visions of a common future across different ethnicities." A Model United Nations [MUN] is a conference that simulates the activities of specific organs and committees of the United Nations. It is a form of experiential education that aims to raise awareness about global issues, the benefits of cooperation, and the functions and structure of the UN. Through MUNs, students develop and practice skills in research, organization, writing, debating, lobbying, negotiation, cooperation and compromise. Internationally known for its innovation and professionalism, UNA-Canada’s growing MUN Programme is pleased to be leading the expansion of Model UN in the Sri Lanka.
