Press Releases Music Without Border Concert and Telethon Raises Over $1 Million for Humanitarian Relief in Afghanistan OCTOBER 23, 2001. The most recent calculation of ticket sales and telethon proceeds from the October 21st Music Without Borders Concert indicates that over $1 Million has been raised for humanitarian relief in Afghanistan. “The response has been tremendous. These funds will significantly increase the capacity of both the United Nations and War Child Canada to address the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and neighbouring countries,” said Steve Mason, Executive Director of the United Nations Association in Canada. “In future weeks, this amount will increase as we continue to receive mail-in and walk-in donations.” On Sunday night, top Canadian artists Alanis Morissette, The Tragically Hip, Barenaked Ladies, Our Lady Peace, Bruce Cockburn and Choclair performed to a sold-out crowd at the Air Canada Centre. Twenty per cent of the proceeds raised at the concert are going to support War Child Canada’s humanitarian work in Afghanistan, while the rest is directed to the United Nations Donor Alert Appeal for Afghanistan. The funds will be used in an attempt to avert a major catastrophe which could result in the deaths of upwards of 7.5 million Afghanis who are without water, food and shelter.
