Press Releases UNA-Canada Brings Model UN to Kosovo 14 May 2002 - The United Nations Association in Canada [UNA-Canada], in conjunction with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe [OSCE] and the United Nations Development Program in Kosovo [UNDP], is working to expand Model United Nations [MUN] activities and conferences throughout Kosovo. From June 19th to June 28th 2002, Jeronimo De Miguel, Project Officer of the MUN Programme at UNA-Canada, and Catherine Letendre, Regional Coordinator for the Programme in Quebec, will travel to Kosovo as facilitators of a 10-day training seminar for over 100 ethnic Serbian and Albanian high school students and 15 of their teachers. The seminar is an integral part of a larger project known as KosoMUN that aims to foster the growth of Model UN in the region. A Model United Nations [MUN] is a conference that simulates the activities of specific organs and committees of the United Nations. It is a form of experiential education that aims to raise awareness about global issues, the benefits of cooperation, and the functions and structure of the UN. Through MUNs, students develop and practice skills in research, organization, writing, debating, lobbying, negotiation, cooperation and compromise. In a series of town meetings sponsored by the OSCE across Kosovo in the year 2000, Kosovars identified education as the second most important priority facing the province. A Model United Nations programme is a powerful and exciting way to respond to the needs of the people of Kosovo. Education through Model UN activities and conferences is at the heart of the MUN Programme at UNA-Canada. While allowing students and teachers to expand educational opportunities, Model UN activities serve to develop crucial skills in cooperation, negotiation and conflict resolution that can play a paramount role in building visions of a common future across different ethnicities. Internationally known for its innovation and professionalism, UNA-Canada's growing MUN Programme is pleased to be leading the expansion of Model UN in the Kosovo region. -30- Note: Jeronimo De Miguel will be available for pre-departure interviews on Wednesday May 22nd, 2002, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
