Press Releases UNA-Canada Announces Launch of Two New Projects OTTAWA, 21 August 2003 - The United Nations Association in Canada is pleased to announce the implementation of the Youth For Diversity: Networking Young Leaders & The Rights Stuff: Youth Training Workshops on the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. These projects will coordinate five regional forums across Canada throughout the next six months, beginning this weekend, August 21-24, 2003 in the Greater Moncton Area. The Youth For Diversity project will bring youth from around the country to five regional youth action courses. The three days of comprehensive training will focus on diversity education, leadership development, capacity building for networks and increasing connectivity between youth and community- based organizations. The project is intended to target youth in remote, rural or under-served areas. The Rights Stuff project is designed to train youth to develop an understanding of their Rights and Freedoms as residents of this country. In a half-day workshop, Youth will discuss the importance of the guidelines set out in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and explore what it means in their daily lives. Both projects will enable youth to understand their role in society and determine their ability to make change. They have been developed in response to youth-identified needs to feel more empowered, connected and able to promote respect, understanding and pride in diversity. The United Nations Association in Canada has a 57-year history of informing and educating Canadians about the United Nations and critical international issues: we strive to foster a greater understanding of the UN and to create links between the work of the UN and the lives of Canadians. We are a membership-based, charitable organization supporting a network of branches and local groups across the country which are international in interests, but relevant to each local community and to each individual. UNA-Canada wishes to thank Canadian Heritage, VIA Rail and First Air for their support of this project. - 30 - For more information: Sherwin Modeste, Project Officer, Diversity, t: (613)232-5751 ext.
