Press Releases UNA-Canada Launches Council of Organizations Ottawa, July 3, 2003. The United Nations Association in Canada is pleased to announce the launch of a new Council open to all Canadian not-for-profit organizations committed to the values and principles of the United Nations and its further reform and improvement. "At a time when some of our largest media outlets are doubting the relevancy of the UN and some of our political leaders are publicly questioning its utility, there is a significant need to demonstrate that Canadians care about the United Nations, want it to be effective and believe that it should be at the centre of our foreign policy," says Steve Mason, UNA-Canada's Executive Director. "Several like-minded organizations have approached us in recent months to ask for tangible ways through which they can demonstrate their commitment to the United Nations. Joining the Council of Organizations is one such way." Members of the Council of Organizations support the efforts of UNA-Canada to build a grassroots movement for the UN through education and public engagement and demonstrate this support to Canadians and Canadian decision-makers. They also have the opportunity to collaborate with UNA-Canada and other Council members on joint public statements, are invited to participate in UNA-Canada's annual Council of Organizations Forum and have access to timely and relevant information on UN issues. The United Nations Association in Canada is a membership-based organization with over 10,000 individual members and donors across the country. Its mandate is to engage Canadians in the work of the UN and critical global issues and to build broad public support for the United Nations in Canada. Its programmes focus on the three pillars of human rights, sustainable development and international peace and security. - 30 - For more information or to join the Council,, please contact:
