Press Releases UN Simulation Event Welcomes over 800 Students in Ottawa 5 March 2003 - The United Nations Association in Canada [UNA-Canada] is hosting the first ever Canadian International Model United Nations Conference [CANIMUN]. Next week, Ottawa will welcome over 800 students from every province, the Arctic region and more than 15 countries around the world. These young people will affirm their commitment to the UN by participating at Canada's only bilingual simulation event for university students. Complimenting a strong pan-Canadian presence is the confirmed participation of international delegates from China, the Philippines, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, South Africa, Gambia, Nigeria, Mali, Cameroon, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Norway, Kosovo, Costa Rica and Colombia. A Model United Nations is a conference that simulates the activities of specific UN organs, programmes, committees and agencies. In the case of CANIMUN, 18 committees will simulate the activities of a variety of UN and non-UN bodies and agencies. Some of these include General Assembly First, Third and Sixth Committees, the Summit of the Americas, the Commission on Sustainable Development, the Summit on Indigenous Peoples and the Summit of the G8. CANIMUN will also offer a simulation experience for more seasoned delegates on a number of Specialized Agencies and Crisis Committees, including the International Court of Justice, the UN Security Council, the US National Security Council and the Suez Canal Crisis of 1956. The current Iraqi Cabinet and a futuristic committee on Elections Canada for the year 2016 will also be a part of the 18 simulation settings at the event. By engaging participants in the highest caliber of debate and negotiation, CANIMUN furthers the understanding of the intricacies behind global challenges and sends an important message to youth in Canada and around the world about the potential for solutions through discussion and multilateral cooperation.
