Press Releases NEWS RELEASE UNA-Canada’s BLUE RIBBON CAMPAIGN – the Symbol of Peace January 24, 2002 Ottawa – Today, in a school gymnasium in the nation's capital, in the presence of 285 children, the United Nations Association in Canada (UNA-Canada) is launching its national BLUE RIBBON CAMPAIGN. The blue ribbons will be available at all participating Canada Post outlets across the country, where donations can be made. Proceeds from the campaign will support the public education outreach programmes of UNA-Canada – with a primary focus on those which educate young people from a global perspective and challenge them to develop the tools and skills necessary to confront some of the world's most complex problems. “The blue ribbon symbolizes the values on which the UN was founded – peace, cooperation, and tolerance. They are to be worn on the lapels of all Canadians who wish to demonstrate their commitment to these values, their support for peaceful resolution to local and global challenges, and their pride in Canada's reputation as a peacebuilding nation,” says Steve Mason, Executive Director. “They put forth a prominent message of hope and peace to the Canadian public at large.” The UNA-Canada is proud to have Canada Post, the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP), and the RCMP as partners in this joint campaign. It will reach 2.3 million school children across this country. Starting this week, police services in most of Canada began visiting Canadian elementary school children between the ages of 8 and 14 to discuss its message of “Keep your dreams alive… Stay Drug-Free! At the same time, each youngster will receive a commemorative stamp pack which includes three limited edition Canadian stamps and a millennium medallion, all contained in a metal keepsake box embossed with a peace dove.” On the front wrap of each keepsake is the UNA-Canada promotion of the BLUE RIBBON CAMPAIGN aimed at encouraging young people and all Canadians to support peace and international cooperation by wearing this symbol of peace. “We are particularly pleased to be partnering with Canada Post, the CACP, and the RCMP on this initiative,” says Geoffrey Pearson, National President of UNA-Canada. “Not only does this help fulfill our mandate of educating Canadians about peace and cooperation, but Canada's police services have long been strong supporters of the peacebuilding work of the UN.” Date and Time: Thursday, 24 January 2002 at 10: 00 a.m. -30 - For further information, contact: Sharon Bradford Tel: (613) 232-5751, ext. 222 |
