Press Releases UNA-Canada Nominated for Award of Excellence For Combating Racism in Canada March 6, 2003 - The United Nations Association in Canada (UNA-Canada) has been chosen as a finalist for the prestigious Award of Excellence, presented bi-annually by the Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF). UNA-Canada has been nominated for its innovative Youth Forums Against Racism project, and for The KIT, a manual produced by youth to combat racism through education. "We are thrilled to be recognized by the CRRF for our achievements in anti-racism education," says Steve Mason, Executive Director of UNA-Canada. "This nomination acknowledges the contributions of over a hundred youth from across Canada who produced The KIT and made significant progress on fighting racism in Canada." The Youth Forums Against Racism (YFAR) project was launched in the context of the United Nations International Year for Mobilization Against Racism. Diverse youth participating in regional forums worked together to generate ideas and concrete action to best address racism through education. The end result was the production of The KIT - an innovative, long-term, anti-racism education model developed by and for youth. The YFAR process was presented as a Best Practice at the World Conference Against Racism NGO Forum. The CRRF's Award of Excellence program recognizes public, private or voluntary organizations whose efforts represent excellence and innovation in combating racism. The winner of the 2003 Award will be announced at the CRRF's Gala Dinner on 27 March 2003, in Toronto. Rida Abboud, a Youth Forum participant and one of the principal authors of The KIT, will attend the event with Mr Mason. - 30 - For more information, please contact: Steve Mason
