Press Releases Young Canadians Prioritise Their Top Concerns 15 May 2002 - According to a new survey by the Youth Summit Team (YST) and the United Nations Association in Canada, young Canadians rank human health and the environment, human rights, and poverty elimination as the most important sustainable development issues for Canada. "These results go to show that sustainable development is about more than just the environment," says Shalene Jobin, member of the Youth Summit Team. "Young Canadians recognize real sustainability problems right here in Canada. We recognize the need to link our economic policies to our social institutions and the environment in order to secure our own sustainable future". The survey, called Mapping the Mind Maze, creates a snapshot of what young Canadians think about sustainable development. The Youth Summit Team surveyed more than 1,300 of their peers from across the country to find out what matters most to young people. For further information, visit the Youth Agenda 2002 website at: www.youth2002jeunesse.unac.org. The Youth Summit Team will use the results of Mapping the Mind Maze to direct their participation at the World Summit on Sustainable Development itself. Based on the priority concerns indicated by this survey, the Youth Summit Team continues to lobby the Canadian government and initiate local and national sustainability projects. The YST also continues to hold a position on the official Canadian government delegation to the WSSD, and will take the concerns outlined in Mapping the Mind Maze to the Summit. Mapping the Mind Maze will serve as a lasting tool to spark discussions and generate meaningful progress among youth in their own communities. The Canadian Youth Summit Team is a group of youth ages 18-28 from across Canada working to ensure the active participation of youth in the preparations for the United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development to be held this August in Johannesburg.
