World Conference Against Racism (WCAR)

Branded everything from a meaningless exercise to the ideological prologue to September 11, the international media's coverage of the United Nations World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerence (WCAR) was largely typical of the overall negative publicity surrounding UN conferences. To thousands of civil society representatives however, Durban represented an unprecedented opportunity to create linkages in the fight against discrimination, strenghthen the anti-racism movement, and position grievances on the international agenda.
