In 1998, the United Nations celebrated its 50th anniversary of its
peacekeeping operations. However, in 1956, thanks to a resolution submitted
before the General Assembly by the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs
at the time, Lester B. Pearson, that the first "Blue Helmet" mission
to the Suez Canal took place. These peacekeeping missions are one of
the ways available to the United Nations to maintain international peace
and security. These "Blue Helmets" are soldiers sent by their respective
countries and whose duty is to ensure that peace be maintained. The
contribution of these "Blue Helmets" to international peace and security
was acknowledged in 1988 and in 1998 when the Nobel Peace Prize was
awarded them.
