Canada & the UN > Canada at the UN: A Proud Tradition

Human Security

Canadians believe strongly in the protection and promotion of human rights, both in Canada and around the world. It is fitting that a Canadian, John Peters Humphrey, drafted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and organized the UN’s Division for Human Rights.

The importance we place on human rights has led us to become active in many aspects of human security, in issues such as sustainable development, peacebuilding, and good governance. Human security issues have both domestic and international dimensions. Canadians believe that the best way to deal with such issues is through constructive engagement with states rather than by taking a confrontational approach.
