Lester B. Pearson's Role in the Formation of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and in Other United Nations Activities

Introduction

The year 1997 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of an extraordinary Canadian, the Right Honourable Lester Bowles Pearson, who had a remarkable career, both in Canadian politics and in the formation of a new world order which emerged during the final few years of World War II, including the creation of the United Nations organization and its various agencies. 1997 is also the first anniversary of the World Food Summit (November 1996), organized by the first permanent agency created by the UN -- the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

This paper will be examining the extensive diplomatic role of Lester Pearson in the United Nations, with a particular emphasis on his active involvement in the formation of the FAO -- an experience which he later proclaimed as being the beginning of his international career, and one that had far-reaching consequences on his life. In many instances, his own words will illuminate both his own contributions and the impact the events had on his own life. As well, the words of others who worked with and/or knew him provide a personal sense of Pearson’s personality and accomplishments.
