Canada & The UN > The United Nations: Some Canadians Who Made A Difference

A booklet by UNA-Canada that lists a number of Canadians who have made significant contributions to the international community through their work in the UN and its affiliated agencies. (1995)

Introduction:

The United Nations (UN) officially came into being on October 24, 1945. Created in the wake of the devastation caused by the Second World War, the UN was designed "to maintain international peace and security..., to develop friendly relations among nations..., (and) to achieve international co-operation in solving international problems of and economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character, and in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights..." During its first fifty-years of existence, the UN has actively helped millions of people around the globe through projects ranging from peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance, to the development of international law I n areas such as the environment and human rights.

Canadians have long played a central role in the work of the UN. This booklet lists a number of Canadians who have made significant contributions to the international community through their work in the UN and its affiliated agencies. In many instances, the accomplishments of these individuals are more numerous and wide-ranging than the notes suggests. This book, however, only hopes to chronicle their major activities and positions as they pertain to the UN. Furthermore, many those listed below have contributed to more than one facet of the UN and therefore could have been included under numerous categories. This lists is far from exhaustive and many Canadians who have played an important international role through the UN have not been included. This does not mean that their contribution is any less important . Instead this booklet puts forward a representative number of Canadians who have had a positive impact on the international community and it provides an opportunity to honour these Canadians our country, and the United Nations.
