The recognized importance of the environment in recent years was highlighted
by the 1992 Rio de Janeiro Conference on the Environment. The UN has
long been involved in environmental issues ranging from sustainable
development to climate change, Many Canadians have been involved with
environmental issues through the UN. The following are several significant
examples.

Carney: Liaison producer to establish a support programme for
developing countries in the production of over 200 films for the
1976 UN Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat I). Appointed Deputy
Director of the UN Audio-Visual Information Centre on Human Settlements.
Served in Kenya as Chief, Division of Information, Audio-Visual
and Documentation with the UN Centre on Human Settlements. (UNCHS)
(1983-85). Commissioner-General of the UN Pavilion at Expo 86 in
Vancouver. |

Elizabeth Dowdeswell:
Canadas principal delegate to the Intergovernmental Panel
on Climate Change and co-chair of the working group on mechanisms
in the negotiations leading to the framework Convention on Climate
Change, adopted in June 1991 at the UN Conference on Environment
and Development (UNCED). Canadas Permanent Representative
to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Appointed Executive
Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in 1992. |

Associate Director of Promotion and Information with the UNEP (1979-84)
Served the Department of Public Information at UN headquarters in
New York. Served on the Canadian delegation to the Law of the Sea
Conference. |

Maurice Strong:
Held many high level positions with the IN, including Secretary-General
of the UN Conference on the Human Environment (1972), first Executive
Director of the UNEP, Executive Co-ordinator of the UN Office for
Emergency Operations in Africa (1985-86) and Secretary-General of
the UNCED (1992). Former President of the world Federation of United
Nations associations (WFUNA). |
