Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations
A user-friendly, informative and well organized website with minimal graphics. The homepage contains both links to different FAO programmes (conveniently broken down by issue, such as agriculture, economics, forestry, fisheries, nutrition etc.) as well as a regularly updated section covering current FAO focal topics which are presented as news highlights, an in-depth focus and global watch. The site also contains a photo archive. English, French, Spanish and Arabic.

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
A very user-friendly and informative website providing information on UNESCO programmes, legal instruments, publications, information services, products, partners as well as general information. English and French.

International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD)
A massive, highly informative site on sustainable development. Includes a broad range of in-depth information covering: specific ‘substantive’ issues such as forests, climate change, food, trade etc. and other issues such as green economics, ethics, peace and global governance; ‘major groups’ in sustainable development such as indigenous groups, business, local communities, civil society, youth, women etc.; specific events such as the Red River Flood of 1997; ideas banks and information facilitation; the monitoring of international conferences (see below); and much more. Can be quite slow in some sections where use of graphics is high. English and French.

"Earth Negotiations Bulletin" & "Sustainable Developments" Publications
IISD’s two key monitoring publications which provide information on both past (since the Earth Summit in 1992) and upcoming international meetings which relate to environment and/or development. The information is of high quality, reliable, independent, and technical. Considered invaluable by policy makers who require up-to-date, detailed information on international meetings (UN-related and other). English and French.

Consortium for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESEN)
CIESEN focuses on providing "information for a changing world". Designed for scientists, decision-makers and the public, this text-oriented site includes background articles and journals, collections of scientific data with both global and regional foci, the final official texts for over 160 international treaties on sustainable development (emphasis more on environmental treaties), and interactive applications. Topics of focus include population, health, development, land-use, agriculture, climate change and ozone depletion. English only.

ENVIRONMENT

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
Using frames but few graphics, this is a well organized website providing information on UNEP programmes, products, services, events and partnerships. Includes regular press releases on UN environmental events and is building up a new section on environmental and cross-sectoral issues. For those interested in recent UN conventions on environmental issues (hazardous wastes, biodiversity, climate change, desertification etc.), UNEP’s Info Unit for Conventions at http://www.unep.ch/iuc contains background information and, where appropriate, links to respective treaty secretariats. Also contains the official website for the UN’s World Environment Day (June 5) at www.unep.org/per/ipa/wed English, French and Spanish.

Environment Canada
Environment Canada’s award-winning site is massive, and yet still extremely well organized and user-friendly. It contains information on Canadian policies, statistics and programmes, ministerial speeches and media releases as well as useful background information on many environmental issues. Much of the information is in a public relations-oriented format which is comprehensive and readily understood. Other sections include more detailed statistical and technical information and data. English and French.

Envirolink
Self-proclaimed as the "largest online environmental information resource on the planet", this site contains a huge library of website resources on environmental issues, each with a brief description of the work of the organization. As well, it contains a discussion forum and hundreds of ideas for environmental activities. English only.
