The United Nations Association in Canada carries out its work within
the context of its mission statement and three overarching themes relevant
to the United Nations. The mission of the Association is to "engage
the Canadian public in the work of the United Nations and the critical
international issues which affect us all," and the three general themes
are peace and security, sustainable development and human rights. The
National Office of the Association strives to carry out all its work
in both official languages.
Each year, the Association adopts a number of key strategic focuses
related to these themes in order to help guide its work and give direction
to project development, Branch activity, organizational governance and
fundraising. These focuses do not preclude carrying out project or programme
activities in other areas, but serve instead as a mechanism through
which the Association can frame its work.
The 2003 Programme of Work divides the strategic focuses of the organization
into three categories: on-going, programmatic and administrative. On-going
focuses are relevant over the duration of several years, whereas programmatic
and administrative focuses
are targeted towards specific years, with some overlap between one year
and the next in order to foster thematic continuity.
In all of its work, the Association strives to maintain flexibility
so that it can be responsive to shifting international priorities and
major global events. UNA-Canada recognizes that national and international
occurrences may lead to a change in strategic focuses at any point during
the year.
