Youth International Internship Program 2001-2002

In May 2001, UNA-Canada was inundated with over 700 applications for the 2001-2002 Youth International Internship Program. To UNAC the message was clear: Canada's youth value the UN and want to contribute first-hand.

Over the past four months, twenty-six eager and highly capable youths have embarked on an experience of a lifetime! Participants from across the nation traveled to UN-offices across the globe. Offices like UNICEF in New York, UNIDIR in Geneva, UNHCR in New Delhi, UNDCP in Barbados to UNDP in Costa Rica, Kosovo, Maldives, Bulgaria and many others. In July, most YIIP participants attended a three to four day briefing at UNA-Canada's National Office in Ottawa.

UNA-Canada is confident that our 2001 interns will excel and benefit as in previous years. Cara Yar Khan from Toronto, writes from Quito, Ecuador about her experience at the World Food Programme to date: "Ecuadorian culture in the social and professional realm is quite unique, embedded with influences of colonialism, machismo, feudalism, racism and elitism…Being in Ecuador is like coming home to wonderful friends, beautiful mountains, lush jungle and sweeping coasts…In terms of personal and professional successes I have found a niche that I love: working with professionals from around the world who are seriously committed to helping those most in need".

The internships enable Canada to increase our youth presence abroad and within the international community. Host organizations themselves have expressed their gratitude to UNA-Canada, the Canadian government and the youth themselves. Looks like another successful round of recruitment for UNA-Canada's Youth International Internship Programme!

On another high note, UNA-Canada, together with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, is proud to have successfully launched and maintained the website for a Youth Internship Alumni Association. The site allows YIIP alumni to share their experiences, network, job search and discuss international issues in various virtual forums.
