Recruitment for the 1999-2000 Youth International Internship Programme is underway
By Elliott Spagat, Communications Officer

For the past two years, UNA-Canada, in conjunction with the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Canadian International Development Agency, has given over 40 young Canadians an experience they will not soon forget. Participants in the Youth International Internship Programme (YIIP) spend six to eight months working at a United Nations related agency somewhere in the world. In the past, participants have worked in such places as New York, Geneva, and Fiji.

This year, UNA-Canada is hoping to allow up to 35 young people to take part in this programme. Applicants must be under 30 years of age; not enrolled in a full-time studies programme as of June 1999; have less than 3 months paid international work experience; and have never participated in Youth International Internship Programme before.

Successful applicants will have a briefing session with other interns before going to their postings. Through the Department of Foreign Affairs and CIDA, each participant receives a stipend to help cover their flight, health insurance and living expenses while participating in the programme.

The YIIP gives young Canadians a chance to gain valuable work experience and set their goals for the future. "My internship has contributed to the clarification of my desired professional path by affording me exposure to an international setting where many specialized roles and responsibilities contribute to an overall effort to improve the human condition," says Tammy Pascal, who was posted with the United Nations Focal Point Office of the Special Advisor on Gender Issues and the Advancement of Women in the Secretariat in New York. "It is from this environment that I have further developed insight into the practices and procedures integral to success in an international forum."
