Message from the Executive Director

Hello everyone, I read everything you folks send but rarely find the time to write anything. I'll try to be a little more forthcoming in future. Thought you'd like to hear some good news. Angus Archer, our Director of Development, has secured Ted Turner for a major corporate gala (and hopefully major media event) to be held in Toronto on June 21st. This will help our finances quite a bit particularly in the difficult summer period.

We also hope to welcome Kofi Annan at a Gala in Montreal on December 7th in connection with the World Civil Society Conference.

We still hope to have a gala in Winnipeg with Lloyd Axworthy if we can tack down a date. And we are working with Edmonton to get a good speaker for their October 24th Gala.

Other news - we have a new Human Rights Project Officer - Her name is Ele Pawelski. She will also be working on the International Year of the Older Person. She has just started to work and you will see her work on the website as things get produced.

We are gearing up for our AGM in Edmonton on June 12th-13th and hope to have a speaker from Foreign Affairs or our Mission in New York. Stay tuned.

The Book on the Civil Society and the UN is in the writing phase with John Foster as Chief Editor. It will be produced in the fall.

Soon we will produce the report on the Security Council meeting we held for DFAIT in January which was very successful.

I attended the very interesting meetings of the Canadian Coalition to Abolish Nuclear Weapons recently and hope to circulate to the Branches some texts from that meeting as well as from the Peacebuilding Consultations which I attended.

Our internship programmes were renewed by DFAIT although we have 5 less than last year. They are very satisfied with our work but had a lower number of internships and we did get the highest number they gave out. We also got 8 from CIDA so Linda Pinnacle, our internship coordinator, is busily working.

We just had the visit of Newton Bowles, our reprsentative in New York. He produced his annual report on the UN which we will distribute to Branches soon.

Things are extremely busy at the moment. I did want to share these things with you, however, as I know you all want to stay up to date as to what is happening here.

Have a good day!

Harry Qualman
