Kootenay Region Branch gives support to child victims of landmines For the past few years the Kootenay Region UNAC, in conjunction with the USCC (Doukhobors), has raised funds for a humanitarian project. Two years ago during the International Year to End Poverty we supported groups working to alleviate poverty locally. Last year we supported the Canada Foods Grains famine relief in North Korea. This year we chose to donate to the Red Crosss efforts toward the rehabilitation of child victims of landmines. Our campaign begins at the vigil on the International Day of Peace (September 8) and ends on Human Rights Day (December 10). This year we raised about $1400 up somewhat from last year. Here is the public service announcement submitted by the branch to CBC to mark the event: Today, December 10, is International Human Rights Day. Fifty years ago the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights symbolized the triumph of the dedication and commitment of ordinary people in securing the recognition of fundamental human rights for all, Canadian John Humphreys helped to lead this effort. Although much progress has been made, many governments still refuse to respect the most basic rights of their citizens and others. Our challenge as Canadians is to continue the work of John Humphreys and countless others until all people everywhere are able to lead their lives in the full light of human rights. This message is brought to you by the Kootenay Region United Nations Association. |
