Executive Director’s Corner
By Harry Qualman, Executive Director, UNA-Canada

Hello everyone! It’s been a busy period at UNA-Canada as we close one fiscal year and move to the new one. We’ve had a number of personnel changes. Jacinthe Morin, our Deputy Director, resigned to take a position with the Department of Canadian Heritage. Jacinthe made a very significant contribution to the well-being of UNA-Canada over the past 4 years. Ian Wildeboer, our human rights Project Officer, resigned to return to full-time studies. Ian did a terrific job managing our activities concerning the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

We have hired Fernand Mercier to replace Jacinthe in her financial functions. Fernand, as new Comptroller, will be working three days per week. He had over eleven years of experience as a Comptroller so we are in good hands. Linda Pinnacle will be working full-time managing our youth internship programmes. Linda was, herself, a youth intern at the United Nations High Commission for Human Refugees in Geneva so she knows the programme very well.

Pieter van der Meer is also starting to work in our office as a volunteer 20 hours per week giving me a hand to catch up on some of the backlog of work I have been facing.

Of course, the exciting news is that Canada has been elected to the UN’s Security Council. Our election is a tribute to our international reputation for being fair and responsible in foreign affairs. We will have the Presidency of the Council in February which is a particularly heavy responsibility. We’ll be reporting on Canada’s activities on the Council from time-to-time to keep you up-to-date.

Thanks to all who read this newsletter for your financial and programmatic support this past year. Let’s hope that 1999 will be an outstanding year for UNA-Canada and for the UN itself.

Peace to you all.
